Wiesel to Mormons: Don't baptize dead Jews
Interfaith

At USA Today:

Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel today called on Mitt Romney to tell the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stop doing proxy baptisms in the names of dead Jews, including Holocaust victims such as Wiesel's parents.

It's not known whether Romney, a former Mormon bishop and still an active believer, baptized any late Jewish people when he participated in the LDS church's practice.

TIL you can baptize a deceased person. Why would a Christian want to baptize a person formerly of Jewish faith? Doesn't it seem inherently wrong to put your beliefs on someone who clearly doesn't believe in the same thing as you?

That question might be better addressed to a Mormon, not a Christian. I could be wrong, but I'm not aware of any Christians involved in such a practice.

My understanding is that Mormon "baptism for the dead" is a sort of baptism by proxy, under which deceased relatives of living Mormons, and perhaps strangers, can be posthumously brought into the Mormon fold. The deceased apparently will be offered the choice to enter the Mormon afterlife or not after they have been postumously baptized. This practice is one of the main reasons why the LDS church emphasizes genealogy; blood relationships are apparently also preserved in Mormon heaven.

The great convenience of this is that you do not personally have to practice Mormonism to avail yourself of the benefits of the Mormon afterlife.

Sounds very generous and inclusive, but I wonder how it compares to other afterlife options?
