Modern Pope Used Ancient Ritual of Self-Flagellation
Literature, Etc.
Written by laika

At ABC News:

Pope John Paul II, whose world travels helped modernize the papacy, sometimes practiced ancient rituals of self-flagellation, including hitting himself with a belt that he kept in his closet, according to a new book. The book "Why He's a Saint" reveals new details about Pope John Paul II's life.

The Polish pope would also sleep at times on the hard floor of his Vatican palace and muss up the bed to avoid drawing attention to his ascetic efforts at piety. The practice is intended to remind people of the suffering of Jesus on the cross.

Another reason that priests shouldn't own Devo records.

you deserve a couple of lashes yourself for that one, PA.

Devo and the priesthood at a certain level do share a penchant for red hats, though, if memory serves...

LOL. That's just... wrong...

How long have you been lurking waiting to use that one, PA?

I can understand sleeping on the floor to remind me of the sufferings of Jesus. I can see that.  It is passive. It is like a Lenten Fast. An active version, like using a belt to inflict pain, seems to me to be too severe. And it makes me wonder if there could be other motivations besides remembering Jesus' suffering. On the other hand, in the past, many well known Christians have done it. I admit I really don't understand it.

I suspect it is an expression of repentance, to be honest. The man may have been an exemplary representative of Christianity, but he was probably well aware of falling short even when we didn't perceive that he did. I suspect that he was attempting canonical satisfactions, in perhaps a more extreme version of the (otherwise) normal Catholic practice. It's what we would generally handle with "Confession and Absolution."

I guess it means that, because You suffered greatly for me, so to (slightly)repay this I offer some suffering back to You.... ie the same as fasting etc...
